Liberal Studies

Liberal study

Liberal arts education can claim to be the oldest program of higher education in Western history. It has its origin in the attempt to discover first principles – ‘those universal principles which are the condition of the possibility of the existence of anything and everything’. The liberal arts are those subjects or skills that are considered essential for a free person to know in order to take an active part in civic life.

In India, Liberal art (sometimes also referred as Liberal Studies or Liberal Sciences) is a newer concept. Liberal arts education encompasses exposure in academic subjects such as Humanities, Commerce, Management, Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

As a student in a liberal arts program you become an intellectual explorer. The dictionary definition of “explorer” is “somebody who travels to distant or unfamiliar places to find out more about them.” This is a fairly accurate description of a liberal arts education. As a student in school of liberal arts, you can now embark on that journey and ask challenging questions, find out what really matters to you, learn about the world as it is and imagine the world as you think it ought to be.
